Frequently asked questions
Can't find your answer? Ask an engineer.
Working with us
Do you work with small businesses?
Yes. Many services are available per device or per hour, without long contracts.
Can you support equipment you didn't install?
Yes. We start with a health check, then take it over.
Do you work outside your cities?
Remote support works anywhere; on-site work outside cities is scheduled as a visit.
Who owns the documentation and passwords?
You do. We hand over everything, and keep it current while we support you.
Infrastructure and data center
Will consolidation cause downtime?
Each wave has a planned window agreed with you and a tested way back; most services move with a short cut-over.
What happens to the old equipment?
We wipe it to a recognised standard or destroy the drives, give you certificates, and recycle through authorised e-waste handlers.
How much can consolidation save?
It depends on the estate; fewer servers and rooms usually cut power, space, licences and support. The discovery report gives your figure before you commit.
Do you only work with these three vendors?
They are the lines we support in depth; ask about others.
Can you take over hardware someone else installed?
Yes, after a health check.
Should we buy or move to the cloud?
We compare both over three years for your workloads; steady workloads are often cheaper on your own hardware.
Can you upgrade a running server room?
Yes, in phases with temporary power and cooling where needed.
Do you maintain the equipment afterwards?
Yes, under an AMC.
How long does a server-room upgrade take?
A small room is usually a few weeks from survey to handover; we work in phases so systems stay up.
Should we leave VMware?
It depends on your size, features used and skills; we compare costs and risks before recommending anything.
Can we try the new platform first?
Yes: a pilot with a few non-critical machines comes before any wave.
Which hypervisor is cheapest?
It depends on your licences, size and skills; Hyper-V suits estates already licensed for Windows Server Datacenter, Proxmox is cost-effective for many others.
Our Active Directory has years of leftovers. Can you clean it up?
Yes: a health check first, then a staged clean-up with rollback.
Can you move us to a newer Windows Server version?
Yes, role by role, with no big-bang cut-over.
How long does an Active Directory health check take?
For most organisations a few days, ending with a report ranked by risk.
Is SCCM still worth running?
For many on-premises estates, yes; co-management with Intune lets you move gradually to the cloud.
Our SCOM is noisy. Can you fix it?
Yes: alert tuning removes noise so real problems stand out.
Can you look after System Center for us?
Yes, under a managed service, including upgrades to new releases.
Is open source safe for business?
Yes, when it's patched, backed up and monitored like any other system; that is what we do.
Can we get support like a commercial product?
Yes, with response times in your contract.
Do we lose support by choosing open source?
No: we provide the support, with response times in your contract, and use vendor subscriptions where they're worth it.
How do we know backups work?
We restore them on a schedule and report the result.
Can you speed up a slow application?
Often, yes: most slowness is in a few queries or missing indexes.
Can you support a database we didn't install?
Yes, after a health check of its configuration, backups and security.
Network and security
Our Wi-Fi is patchy. Where do we start?
A site survey shows coverage gaps and interference before anything is bought.
Do we need SD-WAN?
If you have several branches or depend on cloud apps, it usually pays for itself in uptime and simpler links.
Can you work with the equipment we already have?
Usually yes; the survey tells us what to keep, reconfigure or replace.
Why not a commercial VPN app?
A private VPN keeps your traffic, keys and logs under your control and lets you decide exactly who reaches what.
What happens when someone leaves?
Their key is revoked in minutes, and access stops everywhere.
Will a VPN slow our internet down?
With split tunnelling only work traffic uses the VPN, so everyday browsing is unaffected.
We have hundreds of old firewall rules. Can you clean them up?
Yes: we find unused and overlapping rules and remove them in stages, with your approval.
Will a WAF break our website?
We start in monitor mode, tune the rules, then switch to blocking.
Can you manage a firewall someone else installed?
Yes, after a review of its rules and firmware.
Does this slow down browsing?
Usually the reverse: blocked ads and trackers never load.
What if it blocks something we need?
Add it to the allow list from the dashboard, or ask us.
Does it replace antivirus?
No: it's an extra layer that stops many threats before they load; keep endpoint protection too.
Where should a small company start?
MFA everywhere, patching, backups you've tested, and an access review. We can do all four in weeks.
Can you help with an audit?
Yes: we prepare the evidence and fix the gaps found.
Do you certify us for ISO 27001?
No: certification is done by an accredited body; we help you get ready and fix the gaps.
We back up every night. Isn't that enough?
Only if the copies are offsite, can't be changed by ransomware, and have been restored successfully recently.
How often should we test DR?
At least yearly for the full plan, and monthly for sample restores.
How much does DR cost?
It depends on how fast you need to recover; cloud-based DR often costs far less than a second site.
Cloud and DevOps
Is cloud always cheaper?
No. Steady workloads are often cheaper on premises; we compare over three years before recommending.
Can we use more than one cloud?
Yes, with shared policies and monitoring so it doesn't double the work.
Which cloud should we choose?
The one that fits your applications, skills and data-location needs; we compare them for your case.
How long does a migration take?
Small estates take weeks; large ones run in monthly waves. The discovery step gives a firm plan.
Can we go back if it doesn't work?
Every wave has a tested rollback until you sign it off.
Will users notice the move?
Most moves happen in planned windows outside working hours, with a short cut-over.
Do we need Kubernetes?
Not always. For a few services, plain containers are simpler; we'll say so.
Can you run our clusters for us?
Yes, with upgrades, monitoring and on-call support.
Do we have to rewrite our application?
Rarely: most applications run in containers with small changes to configuration.
We change servers by hand. Where do we start?
Write one environment as code, then repeat it.
Does automation remove our control?
No: every change is reviewed and approved before it runs.
How soon will we see a difference?
Usually within weeks: the first automated pipeline removes most manual deployment steps.
How much can we save?
It depends on the estate; the first review shows the figure before you commit.
Will savings affect performance?
No: we size from real usage and keep headroom.
How do you charge for this?
As a fixed-price review, or as part of a managed service.
Managed IT and support
Do we lose control of our systems?
No: changes follow a process you approve, and you keep all passwords and documents.
Can you manage only part of our estate?
Yes, for example only servers, or only one site.
How is it priced?
Usually monthly, by servers, devices or users.
What do you monitor with?
A monitoring platform run by ServerWorks vendors' own management tools.
Will we be flooded with alerts?
No: we tune thresholds and only tell you what needs your attention.
Do you need access to our systems?
Yes, read-only monitoring access, plus admin access you approve for fixes, all logged.
Do you support equipment the vendor no longer sells?
Yes, where parts are available; we also help plan its replacement.
Can we call you just once, without a contract?
Yes, per call at time-and-materials rates.
What response times do you offer?
Targets by priority and city are agreed in the contract.
What does an AMC cover?
The equipment listed in the contract, the visits per year, and repairs; parts are included or charged as agreed.
Can an engineer be based at our site?
Yes, under FMS, for business hours or in shifts.
Is an AMC worth it for a few servers?
Often yes: one avoided outage usually costs more than a year's AMC.
Is this priced per user?
Usually per user or per device per month.
Do you handle new joiners?
Yes: accounts, device, email and access ready on day one.
What hours does the helpdesk cover?
Business hours as standard, extended or 24×7 by contract.
Can you move our email without losing anything?
Yes: mail, calendars and contacts are copied before the switch, and the cut-over happens out of hours.
Do we need backups in Microsoft 365?
Yes: retention isn't the same as a backup you control.
Which is better, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?
Both work well; the choice depends on the tools your team uses daily. We'll recommend for your case.
Why do our emails go to spam?
Usually missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC records; we check and fix them.
Can you move our website to you?
Yes, with no downtime for visitors.
Can you host a website we didn't build?
Yes, after a quick review of its technology and security.
How is data removed from old disks?
By certified wiping software or physical destruction, with a certificate per device.
Can you track our software licences too?
Yes, alongside hardware warranties.
Do you buy back old equipment?
Where it has resale value we can arrange it, after certified data wiping.
How quickly can an engineer start?
Typical lead time.
Are engineers background-checked?
Yes / process.
Can we try an engineer before a long engagement?
Yes, start with a short engagement and extend it.
Apps, AI and automation
Who owns the code?
You do, as set out in the contract.
Can you take over an app someone else built?
Yes, after a code and hosting review.
How long does a web application take?
A first usable version often takes a few weeks; we agree the scope and dates before starting.
One app for both platforms?
Often yes; we'll recommend native only where it matters.
Do you publish to the stores?
Yes, under your developer accounts.
Do we need a mobile app or a website?
If people use it daily or offline, an app; otherwise a mobile-friendly web app is often enough.
What if one system is down?
Messages wait and retry; nothing is lost, and we're alerted.
Can you connect to systems without an API?
Often, through files, databases or a small adapter.
Do you support integrations after launch?
Yes: integrations are monitored and fixed when a connected system changes.
Will our data train someone else's model?
We choose services and settings where it doesn't, or run models privately.
How do we know it's accurate?
We test it on your real cases before launch and keep measuring.
What does an AI agent cost to run?
Running costs depend on usage and the model chosen; we estimate them in the use-case report.
n8n or Make?
n8n when data must stay on your servers or volumes are high; Make for quick cloud workflows. We'll recommend per case.
What if a workflow fails at night?
It retries, then alerts us, and we fix it.
Can our staff change the workflows themselves?
Yes: we can train them and keep the important ones under review.
Can we start small?
Yes: a pilot with a few devices proves the value before rollout.
Who owns the data?
You do; it can stay on your own servers.
What does an IoT pilot involve?
A few sensors on one machine or room for some weeks, enough to prove the value before rollout.
Our numbers don't match between systems. Can you fix that?
Agreeing definitions is the first step of every project.
Do we need a data warehouse?
Not always; small estates can report straight from a copy of the data.
Can dashboards update automatically?
Yes, on a schedule you choose, from hourly to daily.
Consulting and training
How long does a health check take?
Typical duration for a small company.
Do we have to buy from you afterwards?
No. The report is yours to act on with anyone.
How often does a virtual CIO meet us?
Usually monthly, plus board or leadership reviews each quarter.
Is this only about technology?
No: sometimes the best fix is a simpler process, not software.
How do we know it worked?
We agree the measure (hours saved, errors, turnaround) before starting.
How long does a process review take?
One process usually takes a few days of workshops and analysis.
Do you offer vendor certification courses?
We prepare people for exams; official certification courses are run only where we're authorised.
Can training use our own systems?
Yes, in a safe copy or a lab built to match.
Can training be online?
Yes, live online or on site; labs work either way.
Not sure where to start?
Tell us what's slowing you down and an engineer will get back to you.
